The Haunting

A gripping thriller from the literary master of suspense as Paul Nicholas and Charlie Clements star in The Haunting, a thrilling play based on some of Charles Dickens’ most spine-tingling tales of the unexpected. Read more …

In an ancient, crumbling mansion, sheltering form the howling winds that tear across the surrounding desolate moorland, two men stumble across a dark and terrifying secret that will change their lives forever…

When a young book dealer, David Filde, is employed by a former associate of his uncle to catalogue an impressive library, he finds an incredible array of rare and antiquated books. But as a series of strange and unexplained events conspire to keep Filde from his work, he realises if he is to convince his sceptical employer that the mysteries of the phenomena he is experiencing are real, they must journey together to the very edge of terror, and beyond, to discover the source of the ghostly night–time visitations…

The critical consensus

The poster outside promises a 'journey to the far end of terror.' It's far from that. But The Haunting is an enjoyable, if uneven, ride into the world of Victorian Gothic and the supernatural all the same, with an unexpected sting in the tale at the end for good measure.

This might well be unashamedly commercial hocus-pocus resembling some 1970s prime-time TV pot-boiler. Yet, as has been observed on these pages before, material like this uses exactly the same theatrical accoutrements that a host of younger and hipper theatre-makers are reclaiming as their own in a host of experience-based shows.

Neil Cooper, The Herald, 02/03/2011

The Haunting revels in the old-fashioned power of simple theatrical tricks, and basks in the shrieks and gasps of an audience that is clearly part of the event.

It is a shame that The Haunting edges too far towards the instant, shocking scares more familiar in modern film and TV than really exploiting the terrifying opportunities of theatre.
