Dr Vivien Stirlingshire is a cryptozoologist. Yes, that’s right, a cryptozoologist! She travels the world seeking out hidden and, as yet, undiscovered “animals” – the ones that they tell you aren’t really there – you know the type: the Yeti or that Loch Ness Monster. Read more …
Dr Stirlingshire is unveiling her latest discovery at the world famous RZSS Edinburgh Zoo. Her brother Henry, the Zoo Manager, has organised a grand welcoming party but really he believes his sister has an overactive imagination – “she’s not a proper scientist; after all she believes in The Wild Haggis, no really she does!”
This family friendly show takes you on a journey through RZSS Edinburgh Zoo, where you will meet various characters and forms of life, from squabbling Zoo guides to dancing penguins (not real ones of course) to…. Well, the truth is Dr Stirlingshire doesn’t know what to call it yet.
Maybe you can think of a name for the ….???
There's plenty to delight on many levels – from the trail left by the escaped discovery itself, to punning wordplay in Morna Pearson's script and performances that are both funny and find the emotional heart of the Stirlingshire's' relationship.
Pearson's writing is a kind of child-friendly vaudeville.
Enormously entertaining.
A modest tale, told simply, Dr Stirlingshire’s Discovery is very much a family show made with younger children in mind.
Given its child-like innocence, it’s fair to say there’s little here not to like.
Really lovely and life-affirming.
Writer Morna Pearson and directors Joe Douglas and Lung Ha’s Maria Oller rise to the considerable challenge of a large mixed-ability cast and a sprawling location.
The production is good fun from start to finish and can be summed up in one word: delightful.
Edinburgh Zoo to host promenade theatre for the first time.
