Decky Does a Bronco--Made in Scotland 2010

Grid Iron return with the award-winning production

To bronco a swing you stand on it, worky up to the bumps, kick the swing over your head and jump beneath it. Read more …

It’s the summer of 1983. Five lads act out their dreams and fears in their local playground in Scotland. Broncoing is a sign of manhood – which Decky and his friends all impatiently await. This summer, little do they know how suddenly and abruptly it will be forced upon them…

This powerful outdoor production is a boisterous look at the trials and triumphs of growing up.

This is an outdoor performance. Audiences are advised to dress appropriately.

Decky Does a Bronco is touring throughout Scotland.  For more in-depth details, please check out Grid Iron's website.

The critical consensus

Its emotional directness, puppyish playfulness and sense of how we are all haunted by our childhoods long after we reach maturity is beautifully handled.

***(*)(*)Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

A decade's directing experience has certainly given Harrison's production a slickness it never had before...Maxwell's play seems deeper somehow.

****(*)Neil Cooper, The Herald

Shows how powerful and inventive live performance can be. Do not miss it.

Michael Cox, Onstage Scotland

Despite excellent performances, the play itself has left me a little unsatisfied.

View from the Stalls

Decky Does a Bronco seems a more timely play than ever.

****(*)Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman

Some parts of the plot were blown away [by the wind] but ultimately the whole production is strong enough to blow away any audience.

Joy Watters, The Courier

Decky shows his age, but the company is outstanding.

***(*)(*)Michael Coveney, WhatsOnStage.com

While the dialogue feels a little slight at times, Douglas Maxwell's elegiac piece builds up to the final death of innocence with memorable momentum.

***(*)(*)Alice Jones, The Independent

Douglas Maxwell's play...still resonate(s).

****(*)Ian Shuttleworth, Financial Times

A bittersweet portal into everyone's past.

****(*)Suzanne Black, The List

[A] rueful observation of children at play.

Gerald Berkowitz, The Stage

...wise and funny vision of peer pressure among young boys.

Mark Fisher, The Scotsman

The writing is brilliant and the atmosphere grips throughout.

****(*)Daisy Bowie-Sell, The Telegraph
