Featuring two terrific hours of the greatest songs ever written, including That’ll Be The Day, Oh Boy, Rave On, La Bamba, Chantilly Lace, Johnny B. Goode, Raining In My Heart, Everyday, Shout and many many more, this show is just Peggy Sue-perb!
The incredible legacy of the young man with glasses lives on in this theatre concert, a heady reminder of the countless people he inspired to follow in his footsteps.
So while Buddy feels dramatically quite flat, what rightly wins out, is the music. It’s enough to send audiences home searching out Holly on their streaming service of choice, his talent having outlasted even physical formats he never lived to see.
Continues to pack in crowds who can see past its flimsy storyline and lack of dimension, and concentrate instead on the rollicking rock’n’roll good time it provides.
Packed with terrifically up-beat numbers delivered with consistent verve, Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story remains a bankable night out.
If you find yourself ready to rock, Buddy will provide the beat. If you find yourself unwilling, the songs may well snatch your cynicism away from you.
The show is lucky in that its redeeming features lie in the latter half; when the audience finally get on board, the music is enough to let them forget the questionable accents and thin plot thread of moments gone by.
