Apples

Apples

The first stage-adaptation of Richard Milward's remarkable debut novel.

Shameless, ruthless and intensely poetic, Apples is a dazzling, tragicomic love story of adolescence. Read more …

Enter the chaotic world of Adam & Eve – it’s a very different Eden where adults are absent and life is both terrifying and thrilling. Eve has tasted every kind of apple. Adam hasn’t tasted anything at all. When two such different people meet, is paradise lost or might it be found?

Newcastle-based Northern Stage and Company of Angels collaborate on a real and beautiful depiction of teenage life in the 21st century.

Very strong language with sexual and violent content.

The critical consensus

It's shocking stuff, but it never feels gratuitous.

****(*)Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

It's very well done, but a bit too pleased with itself.

***(*)(*)Michael Coveney, WhatsOnStage.com

An unflinching tale

***(*)(*)Ian Shuttleworth, Financial Times

Played with fresh-faced vim by [its] youthful cast.

****(*)The Herald

the language is ear-singeingly explicit.

***(*)(*)Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman

A rollercoaster ride through adolescence in all its frantic, anxious, smeary, glittering glory.

Alice Jones, The Independent

Lines of nonchalant brutality are delivered with a wink or a shrug.

***(*)(*)Shona Craven, Onstage Scotland

This intelligent production rises far above the run of the mill kitchen sink dramas we have grown numbed to over the years.

Nick Awde, The Stage

Richard Milward's text breaks no new ground in the genre, but leads Therase Neve and Scott Turnbull bring compelling performances to the piece.

***(*)(*)Steve Cramer, The List

Scott Turnbull as Adam and Therase Neve as Eve are charming as lost souls looking for each other.

****(*)Daisy Bowie-Sell, The Telegraph
