It’s Hogmanay in a Glasgow wash house, and the girls need to get their washing done before the bells. Join Dolly, Magrit, Doreen and Mrs Culfeathers as they laugh and cry their way through the last day of the year - with a little help from the not so handy Andy. Read more …
First performed in May 1987, The Steamie has delighted and entertained audiences all over the world. Writer Tony Roper directs this new 30th anniversary touring production starring Libby McArthur, Mary McCusker, Steven McNicoll, Carmen Pieraccini and Fiona Wood.
Above all, Roper's creation has become a classic, not out of any sentimental nostalgic appeal, but because it is a plea for community as a thing to cherish.
Roper’s cast for this anniversary version – Mary McCusker, Libby McArthur, Carmen Pieraccini, Fiona Wood and Steven McNicol – is possibly the finest and funniest to play The Steamie since that electrifying first production.
Such is the affection the play has accumulated over the last three decades that to say one doesn’t like it is equivalent to breaking wind in church. I beg your pardon, therefore, because sitting in an adoring audience for The Steamie makes me feel like I’ve turned up at a Star Trek convention in a Chewbacca costume.
You will be hard-pressed to find another work that tugs at your heart strings and equally make your spirit soar as this does. A classic, and deservedly so, this 30th anniversary production is simply unmissable.
Although it seemed to be a smash with most of the audience I found that The Steamie took too long to get going and it favoured cheap laughs over any kind of substantial story.
The strength of this production assures us that the show will undoubtedly be around for another thirty years. Probably even longer.
There is genuine warmth as well as hilarity.
Scottish classic The Steamie returns to the stage.
On Tour, from Wednesday September 6, 2017, until Saturday November 11, 2017.
