You are cordially invited back to the same venue to witness Sandy’s memorial service, where his life will be remembered, commemorated and eulogised. As those of you who knew Sandy in this life will attest, he was a meticulous planner and, as such, he has left instruction for the ceremony to be conducted as he would have wanted. Be prepared to laugh, cry and sing your hearts out as we send Sandy off to the hereafter. Let’s hope everything goes smoothly this time.
Jaw-dropping, riotous comedy with a genuinely unexpected surprise.
The audience is never in any danger of brooding too deeply on mortality.
There is potential here for a sharp and biting tragicomedy but Rob Drummond’s script takes an abrupt body swerve and veers away into a rather uninspired conclusion.
The plays more solemn moments strive to have feeling and rise above the madness, which is a welcome addition; however, the delight of the play lies in its sheer camp.
This works when it keeps faith in the idea of deeply immersive theatre. But every time it stops playing it straight and lets you think it might not be that, is a moment of loss.
