May not be as big, bold and brash as other productions, but succeeds in being heartfelt, honest and human. Not to mention constantly and gloriously funny.
Big, powerful emotions are harnessed to most glorious effect.
Pure Blighty at heart, Calendar Girls is a quintessentially British comedy.
It is fair to say that Firth and Barlow’s attempt is definitely worth skipping that next W.I. meeting for, but if you are looking for a groundbreaking new musical, I’m afraid this won’t be your star baker.
So, while it may not have you singing the soundtrack on your way home, Calendar Girls The Musical will leave you with warmth, a full heart and some very quotable one-liners.
This version of Calendar Girls is a richly comic and emotional experience; and one that generates a real sense of female solidarity, backed by good men, in an increasingly sombre world.
Overall, I found Calendar Girls to be a bit of a mixed bag. It's a great story but I found that the music didn't add anything to it and made it quite saccharine. It's saved by a fantastic cast but you probably won't be humming the songs on your way home.
