Snow Queen, The--Dundee

Dundee Rep

Winter is magical and mysterious. There are secrets in the snow. But when Gerda’s best friend Kai goes missing, she must face her fears and embark on an epic quest to find him. Read more …

With the help of an unlikely band of companions, Gerda travels to the Kingdom of Ice to confront the Snow Queen and rescue her friend. But things aren’t always what they seem…

From the writing team behind Little Red and the Wolf and the creative team behind last year’s A Christmas Carol, comes a seasonal adventure for the entire family. With an epic original score, spellbinding storytelling, and more than a pinch of Christmas magic, this thrilling reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fable promises to be a fairy-tale you won’t want to miss this Christmas.

The critical consensus

The cast of nine give it their all, seeming much larger as they embody the host of characters peopling the journey from villagers to eccentrics Gerda encounters on her journey.

A musical winter warmer designed to melt hearts and minds.

****(*)Neil Cooper, Coffee-Table Notes, 07/12/2018

With a strong female hero in a superb Sparkes, some catchy songs and a few surprises along the way, the production is mostly successful, if a little unwieldy at times. Like the best Christmas banquets, some trimming(s) would be welcome.

The storytelling comes into its own in the second half, with the finale easily stirring the emotions as well as the senses.
