The critical consensus

It’s a curiously conceived studio oddity which nevertheless casts a gimlet eye on how easy it is to be all but rubbed out by the state at large.

It all appears heartily amusing under Ed Robson’s concise direction, with plenty of optical tricks and playful diversions. But with Addison’s utterly straight performance sparking off the insanity and wonderment of Jack and Den Hertog, the enormity of the reality of Peters’ past is revealed with a delicate shudder. Brilliant stuff.
