Following on the success of '3 Guys in Drag Selling Their Stuff', 'The Musical of Musicals: The Musical' and their notorious 'Supper Club Cabaret' nights, the company now return in an exciting collaboration with leading Scottish actress Angela Darcy (Autobahn, Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off, Our Teacher's A Troll, Sub Rosa), who will make her directing debut with this production.
Many will be familiar with the popular film adaptation of this play featuring a stellar cast of Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley Maclaine and Julia Roberts. Now is your chance to re-live the antics of Truvy's beauty salon performed by some of Scottish theatre's leading female talent in the intimacy of the Tron's Changing House.
Shelby (Carmen Pieraccini) is getting married. M'Lynn (Lynn Mulvenna) is the proud, but bossy, mother. Bitter Ouiser (Tony Fruitin) has an acid tongue. Widowed Clairee (Anne McMenemy) searches for a diversion, whilst Truvy (Isabelle Joss) & Anelle (Lucy Mills) snip, polish and tame at Truvy's beauty parlour, Louisiana.
It may well have been first night nerves or noxious hairspray fumes which undid what could have been an excellent production.
At times this version feels a little under-rehearsed...there's a nice rapport among the cast.
An uneven but refreshingly honest take on the original.
The acting in Angela Darcy's production is sometimes a little uneven and old-fashioned, with too much hand-waving.
