Lorna Irvine reviews 'something truly special'.
Slowly, methodically, a man in a greatcoat and hat who looks like he may have escaped the Stalinist purges creates a little bulbous man from a pink plastic shopping bag. Tentatively, he turns on extractor fans to the side of the stage and a wind machine and lets it whip up into the air, adding another, then another, then another of many colours, until a strange plastic ballet ensues.
But man, it seems, cannot abide beauty, and just as soon as he has created it, it must be destroyed...so the 'heads' are brutally decapitated. It is a cruel blow to an inventive elegiac piece made with the minimum of resources, but maximum charm.
Everyone in the room, from babies to senior citizens, is transfixed. Crying Out Loud and Company Non Nova have crafted something truly special here. Take children along, and watch their faces light up.
