Film Review: Happy Feet Two (**)

Michael Cox finds the new animated film disappointing.

Plot Line

Mumble the penguin returns, along with his shy son Erik. Together, along with the help of a few other penguin children, they must save their colony from disaster.

Review

Happy Feet Two isn’t a film that’s been made; it’s been manufactured. Let’s be honest: there wasn’t really a demand for a follow-up to the original. It was self-contained, was released five years ago and hasn’t become a modern classic with countless broadcasts and mentions in pop culture.

And yet, here it is: another serving of cute penguins singing modern songs and dancing their little webbed feet off—but this time in glorious 3D! With many voices belonging to stars. And cute penguins. And lots of bright colours. And did we mention the cute penguins?

A lot of money has been thrown at this, and to tell the truth there is actually a lot to like. Savion Glover just might be the finest living tap dancer, and his choreography is playful and enjoyable to watch come to animated life. The characters do have some entertaining moments, the animation is quite good and, though it isn’t necessary, there are some fun 3D effects.

But with all the over-producing that has gone into the film, those in charge neglected a teeny-weeny detail that makes this film drop like a lead balloon: the script. Seriously, trying to describe the plot to this film is nearly impossible because it isn’t really about anything. Characters come and go and come back, and while there are a couple of themes floating about, some cancel others out. If it is ‘about’ anything, it is about an excuse for CGI animals to dance and sing.

And for a film that’s supposed to centre on a penguin colony, its brightest light comes from the unnecessary subplot involving two krill named Will and Bill. Voiced by Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, their story takes up a third of the film and is far more playful and interesting than anything involving the penguins.

With all the choices out there, it’s hard to justify spending the time and money on Happy Feet Two. Which is unfortunate, because a lot of time and money has been wasted making it.

Bottom Line

If you have children who love dance and/or penguins, then by all means take the plunge. Other than that, it’s best to happily step aside and sit this one out.
