Plotline
Two rival musicians spend 24 hours in each other’s company at T in the Park when they are handcuffed together.
Review
It would be very easy to dismiss You Instead: it’s cheaply made and filled with annoying characters that aren’t nearly as interesting or talented as they think they are. It also fails to capture the full spirit of T in the Park, providing only a shallow glance of the talent and madness one can find there.
And yet, for some odd reason, it kind of all works. After a rocky beginning, the film slowly grows and manages to be entertaining. It never comes close to fulfilling any of its promise, but it has enough charisma and innocence to pull it together.
Like a night out on a pub crawl, what was entertaining at the time doesn’t measure up in the sobering light of the dawn. Songs that seemed catchy don’t grow on a second hearing and jokes and scenarios aren’t nearly as amusing upon reflection. Still, You Instead has enough heart and charm to make it worthwhile.
Bottom Line
Not as good in retrospect but enjoyable enough at the time of viewing.
