Review: Still Game: The Final Farewell ****

Michael Cox reviews the send off of some of Scottish TV's most beloved characters.

Jack and Victor (and the gang) are back one last time. That might be a surprise for those who watched the final TV episode earlier this year, but Still Game: The Final Farewell is billed as the final appearance of Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill’s beloved characters—and it is a fitting send off.

Is there a plot? Kind of. But as with the television programme, the highlight is never in what happens but in the patter between the characters, and in this regard the show has some hilarious moments, particularly in the second half. Each of the core company have at least one key scene to shine, and the production uses large screens, grand musical numbers and cameo appearances (including a few other creations by Kieran and Hemphill) to flesh out the performance, mostly to winning effect.

While The Final Farewell may not have anything close to the programme’s finest moments, it is still a terrific chance to see these beloved characters one last time, and it should more than please anyone who is a fan.

Still Game: The Final Farewell is at the SEC Hydro until October 13.
