Jo Turbitt is enchanted by her first day at the food event.
Set in the idyllic setting of Edinburgh's Meadows, the Taste of Edinburgh Festival is every Gastro-geek’s dream. Ignore the weather and let your taste buds and desire for ‘yum’ guide you over to this flavoursome event. The mud only adds a rustic, country feel and the squelching about becomes quite fun!
There are foods and stalls for kids, gastro-enthusiasts and those who simply like to fill their tums with tasty treats. Allow for a healthy chunk of time to wander, to sniff, to savour and to soak up everything that it has to offer. With all the samples from all the stands you could happily eat your way through a three course meal consisting of a rainbow of textures. Remember where you've been because I can guarantee you'll be revisiting the stands to buy up a year’s supply to do you until the next Taste festival.
There's live music, celebrity chefs, demonstrations, master classes, booze and an impressive (in fact almost regal) representation of what Edinburgh has to offer in terms of its food and hospitality industry.
Alongside the locals sit companies from across Scotland and the World; their enthusiasm for their produce is infectious. Whether you are inspired by Heston, Jamie, Hugh, Raymond or an inspirational cook in your family, if you are guided by your creative instincts in the kitchen or if you are a devotee to recipe books, Taste of Edinburgh will encourage you to delve deeper into your culinary passion and dare you to dream about platefuls of possibilities.
My top tip is to buy up a range of ingredients and invent on the way round the stalls; you'll be pleasantly surprised and revel in every mouthful. I'm coming back tomorrow, rain or shine.
Taste of Edinburgh is on until July 8. Check website for specific event information
