Both funny and shocking, this renowned play mixes edge-of-your-seat tension with gallons of Scottish black humour to create an unforgettable night of theatre.
Directed by Rapture’s Artistic Director Michael Emans, The Collection features a powerful script by acclaimed Scottish playwright Mike Cullen, bought to life by an all-star cast led by Scottish theatre legend and High Road star Jimmy Chisholm, River City bad boy Tam Dean Burn, star of Young Adam and Goodnight Mister Tom Pauline Turner plus acclaimed theatre actor David Tarkenter (Rapture Theatre Company’s Betrayal and Hamlet).
A play which, in the end, says only what was obvious at the start: that where money becomes the only measure of worth, human beings dwindle into cruel, ridiculous caricatures of themselves, and life becomes hell.
Rapture’s revival offers no surprises, but present a well-made play in a measured, intense version that is unflinching in its portrayal of a real horror.
There is no happy ending here, no redemption and no offer of a solution. Just like real life for those in serious debt.
Dark and frightening in places but utterly watchable, The Collection is a timeless yet damning examination of greed and exploitation, that is more relevant now than when it was first written in the 1990s.
