Across the Festivals: Funeral Replacement

Weird Fringe takes a (****) journey around Edinburgh.

Boarding the Necrobus on Waverly Bridge was the best start to a performance this Fringe. Getting on a bus in the dark, with a coffin in it and sitting on plush seats with little lamps on in the windows was very exciting.

The Necrobus was full and the audience was very much up for the experience: there was a real buzz before the bus even started.

As the bus pulled away, off we went on a journey through Edinburgh for the funeral of Roger Cocksweets. On this journey we were treated to ridiculous testimonies to Roger on screen from various family members as well as performance poetry and a dance from his hilarious niece. The audience were handed song sheets to sing from, which included a hymn and a rap, and there was more audience interaction when Roger’s belongings, including a wire coat hanger, were handed out.

The funeral director had to get off the bus to sort things out at the side of the road and at one point two characters disappeared out of the bus. There was no telling what was going to happen next.

This is by no means a piece of theatre which would win any critic’s awards or prizes for comedy writing; however it was a brilliantly entertaining experience which was unique, highly entertaining and very memorable.
