Across the Festivals: Lobsters

Weird Fringe reviews Luke Barnes' (****) contribution to the PEEP venue.

This was the first performance that I had seen in Assembly Garden’s PEEP venue. I was escorted underneath some flaps of black plastic and left in my own tiny booth with a stool, a set of headphones and a small window.

I put the headphones on and was treated to the sounds and grunts of people having what sounded like pretty good sex. Then the lighting and music changed and I could see through the window.

I was watching a movement sequence of a couple having sex. It took a while to adjust to the bizarre venue and to relax into the performance, but as the piece progressed it proved to be a powerful and gripping tale of a couple bound together through sex and habit.

The two actors perfectly captured the numbing tension between an unsettled couple and sitting spying on them through a one way mirror made it all the more raw.

The contradiction between the sexual movement and the heartless dialogue within the piece portrays a relationship of sheer lust. As an audience member peeping in, you are allowed to see those private moments between couples that are not generally shared: sex and conflict.

This piece explores sex, lust, freedom, responsibility and relationships. It places in front of you the reality and consequences of giving into lust rather than believing in love.

This venue made for visually stunning views of the performers and at times it was like watching an ever changing canvas in front of you. The music coming through the headphones was the perfect accompaniment and aided this performance in being the memorable and thought provoking experience that it was.
