Lorna Irvine reviews a production for Dance International Glasgow.
Preceding tonight's performance is a gorgeous short film by Scottish Ballet dancers Jamiel Lawrence and Lewis Landini, A Portrait of Marc Brew, which shows Brew rehearsing in the studio. It is as elegant and impish as the man himself.
Exalt
A world premiere, Marc Brew pulls together Scottish Ballet and Indepen-dance 4 in a beautiful piece reflecting on space, difference and human interaction.
The mercurial moods are athletic, vulnerable and sensual. The ensemble catch, balance and hold each other, and fall to the throb of Nils Frahm's gorgeous textured music, almost becoming grand structures or statues.
Four ladders complicate the set, which the dancers weave around. As the music evolves, so the dancers become like clockwork toys, fully integrated like a well-honed machine.
5 Tangos
Hans van Manen's classic 5 Tangos is notable for being principal Luciana Ravizzi's last for Scottish Ballet, and she makes an imperious, poised lead.
The five routines pulse with passion, whether dark, playful or sexy, with an irresistible geometric composition. Rimbaud Patron in particular impresses with his sinewy control, and the whole is mysterious and noirish.
Performed as part of this year’s Dance International Glasgow at Tramway.
