Dance Review: Nederlands Dance Theater 2 2016

Jo Tubitt has nothing but superlatives for this latest tour of the acclaimed company.

Nederlands Dance Theater 2 are extraordinary. Exquisite. The closest to dance perfection: in fact God Like; an ensemble of dancers who ooze technical and performance virtuosity. An evening of three sections, six dances in total, all mesmerising and stunning.

The opening trio of work by Sol Leon & Paul Lightfoot took us through various takes on relationships, but not in a conventional way; the style of the work, the costume and music took us to three different impressions of emotion. Visiting a pure Shakespearean vibe, moving swiftly into quirky, almost cartoon-like lust than deftly slipping into Dickensian tones, this was as magical as the work itself: mesmerising in quality, perfection and performance.

The second section had two pieces of work, brought to life contrasting in style and energy, but again displaying the depth of precision and exquisite-ness of this ensemble of dancers. In ‘Mutual Comfort’ the dancers moved like charcoal silhouettes across a watercolour washed background, and in ‘Solo’ three male dancers batted the energy between them with limitless bounds in a post-modern world. ‘Cacti’ brought the evening to a close with wit, humour and cheek, proving that dance is not only great when immersing itself in the moment, but also when it’s laughing at itself, and those watching it!
