Festival Review: One Man Star Wars (***)

Michael Cox reviews a production geared towards Star Wars fans only.

One Man Star Wars: that title serves as its very own review. If it sounds like something you’ll connect with, the good news is that you are in for a treat. If it doesn’t appeal, then there is absolutely nothing in the hour-long production that will make you glad you ignored your inner voice.

Charles Ross does exactly what he promises: with gusto and impressive raspberry blowing techniques (and with only the assistance of lights and a wireless mic), he manages to thunder through George Lucas’ original trilogy, literally only stopping for breath.

And that’s it.

But for any Star Wars fan, that is enough. Ross has a glee in his stride as he struts about the stage and re-enacts the key scenes and lines from the films. The production’s best moments are when he offers sarcastic commentary or responses: winning moments include his treatment of the ‘It’s a trap!’ and ‘I love you. I know’ lines and his reaction for Chewbacca not getting a medal at the end of A New Hope.

Did the above references make sense? If so, check the production out and have a great time. If not, avoid it as steadfastly as most fans avoid the prequels.

Performs at Assembly at George Square until August 24
