Jo Across the Festival - Aug 4

Jo Turbitt reviews her first festival show: Bang Bang Circus(**).

A family cabaret show: eight talented performers consisting of a mix of clowns, jugglers and speciality acts tied together by a Chaplinesque clown. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much going ‘bang’ in Bang Bang Circus.

The show has high points, including a fantastic clown who captures the art of mime to a tee and a Glaswegian comedian who’s patter was right on the button for adults and kids. Overall the show is let down by a lack of direction, numerous pregnant pauses and a lengthy running time. A few acts suffered from lack of rehearsal, too.

There are moments of ‘awe’, but not enough to sustain the audience of various ages through 90 minutes. At times, the production felt like eight street performers bundled together into a show without much thought to the concept or shape of the overall show. Disappointing.

Bang Bang Circus performs at the Spiegeltent in Assembly George Square from Aug 3-11 at 1600.
