Jo Across the Festival - Aug 5, 2011

Jo Turbitt reviews 4 Poofs and a Piano - Business as usual (****).

They’re topical, they’re talented and… they tap!

This show does what it says on the tin: 4 poofs, a piano and an array of costumes that wouldn’t be out of place in any decent cabaret bar. These men are showmen, musically on the button in a show, which is crafted to engage, entice and make you laugh out loud. Not only do they sing, but the quartet also give us a flavour of their comedic-movement skills in a piece that heralds Les Ballet Trockadero. Their songs take popular tunes but inject their own vava-voom into the lyrics; songs on their ‘burning issues’, on topical issues and to top the evening off, a fantastic musical theatre parody examining the 21st century way to audition for a show in the west end!

I was expecting less wit and more camp comedy; they gave both with gusto, oomph and pizzazz. If you’re looking for a way to kick start off your evening with a bang– this is it!

4 Poofs and a Piano – Business as usual is showing at Pleasance Courtyard 3-28 Aug (no preformance 17 Aug) at 18.00.
