Music Review: New Candys--New Candys as Medicine (Picture In My Ear/Fuzz Club) ***

Lorna Irvine finds the band's album 'good for those of us who like a drop of the dark stuff'.

Formed in 2008, Italian band New Candys are another young band who have emerged from the New-Psych movement, along with Tame Impala, Temples, Hookworms and many other leather-clad creatures.

This album was mixed by Loop's original drummer/producer John Wills and definitely shares Loop's swirling psychedelic influences: The Sonics, The Fugs and many more late sixties icons.

Lead single ‘Dark Love’ has a Jesus and Mary Chain vibe, as though drowning the Beach Boys then hiding them in the Manson house. ‘Song For the Mutant’ meanwhile has Diego Menegaldo's vocals layered under a menacing jangle; whereas the grinding ‘Aphrodite in Leather’ could be a cousin of The Stooges' ‘No Fun’ with a riff that throbs like a loose tooth. Only ‘Thrill Or Trip’ changes tack, mining country noir, fusing "whoo whoo" backing vocals and twanging guitar.

New Candys may not be masters of sonic reinvention, but what they do they do well, and live they will surely be a pile driving experience. New Candys As Medicine is good for those of us who like a drop of the dark stuff.

New Candys As Medicine is released on Picture In My Ear on CD and Fuzz Club on deluxe vinyl on April 6th.
