Music Review: Kings of Leon

Deborah McArthur finally makes it to see a band she missed at T in the Park.
I missed out seeing Kings of Leon at T in The Park a few years back due to matters outwith my control and I was gutted. I’m not bitter about it!!! Well, I’m not anymore as I have now seen them. Maybe I was a little but that has gone now...

I hold my hands up and admit I am one of those fans that got into the band about 2008 because of ‘Sex On Fire’, but I have since listened to their back catalogue and realised I knew some of the songs without even knowing who han sung them. I like discovering bands at my own pace: it’s like uncovering treasure that’s been hidden for years. But as this treasure is now so famous and known worldwide, it’s amazing it took a track like Sex on Fire to catapult them into stardom.

Murrayfeild as a venue was brilliant. A real festival feel, and the walk from Haymarket to the stadium really got me in the mood. KOL had taken over, fans everywhere, singing, dancing, having a few cheeky beers: everyone was on good form. I was savouring the atmosphere so much that I didn’t make it in for the first two support acts, but did make the effort to see The White Lies, or the majority of their set, and I liked what I saw. I have one of their albums and will be purchasing the most recent one, and may seek them out again to go and see as a headline act. My friend and I were saying we were slightly disappointed The Features weren’t on the support list seen as they are signed to KOL label, but we didn’t complain as The White Lies had done a good set.

There was no big countdown or huge introduction...KOL walked onto stage, took up their positions and started playing. Caleb didn’t say much during the 2-hour set except "I don't know what it is about Scotland, with you guys there's just no such thing as too much fun." And he was right: the crowd was bouncing, the guys churned out tune after tune and they all sounded even better due to the atmosphere and surroundings. The band weren’t geeing the crowd up; they were just playing their music like they could have been anywhere. The songs themselves and the kudos of the band created the atmosphere, and it was electric.

They played a selection of tracks from all five of their albums, but the hits that made the crowd go crazy were of course ‘Sex On Fire’, ‘On Call’, ‘Molly’s Chambers’ and ‘Use Somebody’, which was their encore. The most show business aspect of the whole event was the fireworks going off at the end, but you were left in no doubt that you had seen someone big, enormous in fact: they didn’t need a fancy stage or production behind them.

It now doesn’t bother me that I didn’t get to see them at TITP as this gig was amazing and I don’t know if T would have given me the true KOL experience as being in Murrayfield Stadium surrounded by thousands of fans did! Thank you KOL!!!
