Music Review...Ellie Goulding.

Deborah McArthur seems a bit disappointed.

Lights went down and the crowd erupted. I never realised how many loyal and dedicated fans Ellie Goulding had but they were going crazy in anticipation of her taking the stage, and once she did it went even more mental.

For me she didn’t get off to the best start as she opened playing the drums, but it didn’t look natural--she looked a little awkward. But then she took to the mic and who can deny the girls talent.

Crystal clear voice and she is technically a wonderful singer. This Love (will be your downfall) was just brilliant--not one of my favourites from the album but loved it live. The gig was mellow and when she sang you could see how passionate she was about it, but unfortunately I didn’t connect with her. It may have been as I couldn’t understand a word she said when she spoke to the crowd but also I didn’t feel she had that stage presence of other female artists such as Florence or Marina. She did earn brownie points for her cover of Temper Traps “Sweet Disposition”. It was beautiful and I would certainly buy this if she released it; a-maz-ing!!

During the set a video diary of her came up which tracked her career so far showing her in rehearsals etc and it was voiced by Ellie herself. Even though I thought it was super cheesy it was interesting and gave us a little insight into Ellie the person. There is no denying she is a true artist, fabulous lyrics, haunting quality from her voice, but as I’ve said she never had great stage presence for me. In saying this, no-one else seemed to notice this.

On a positive, we thought for a split second she may be miming as she sounded so god damn good!! But she was singing live. Her encore was of course “Starry Eyed” and the crowd went ballistic. She rocked out on this song; the energy she gave was insane. I only wished she had given this more throughout the gig.

I like her album and will probably continue to buy her music and if she is on at a festival and doesn’t clash with other artists I like I would go and see her. But would I pay for gig tickets again……..probably not!
