Deborah McArthur reviews Example.
Bouncing. Sweaty. Electric. Banging. All are words I would use to describe Example’s gig at the ABC Glasgow.
From start to finish the crowd sang along and jumped constantly to every dirty beat. It was everything I was expecting and more; the electro dub step sound excites me so much I would recommend everyone to see Example at some point. Example describes his new work as "Dysfunctional Electro-Pop" which I love! The energy he gives when he performs makes you want to go crazy, and he is so confident on stage, directing the crowd to put up our hands, wave, scream, dance and everyone followed his commands as we were all under his spell.
His hits, ‘Watch the Sun Come Up’ and ‘Kickstart’ sounded amazing live, as did all the other tracks. But my favourite was ‘Dirty Face’. This tune has such a hard beat it is infectious; you can’t help but move your feet. This was an up-beat, faced paced gig with track after track of what I can only describe as hits. He has such control on stage and is able to rhyme and sing, dance and perform he is a true professional.
He is not only a musician but an all round creative person, or so I’ve been finding out on the wonderful World Wide Web - when he was younger he won a poetry completion and I understand why. Some of his lyrics are powerful and thought provoking and his delivery is second to none. Sometimes I cringe when I hear English people rap, but certain people can pull it off really well and he is one of them. In his early days he and some friends directed and shot the video for his song ‘Me + Mandy’ at a cost of only £1000. He also wrote and performed a stand-up comedy routine which he performed in a Covent Garden Pub and the Lyric Hammersmith and can be found on YouTube. He is obviously a man with words and delivery!
I was a fan before seeing him but I am now a huge fan!!!
