Music Review...Paloma Faith

Deborah McArthur is blown away by what she sees and experiences.

The red curtains parted, the show started and there she was--standing in a superstar pose wearing a red metallic skirt which looked like it was made out of Post-It notes, a black top and a silver sparkly cape and of course a sculpted fan looking head dress – Paloma Faith was in the building!!!!

Before I get onto how wonderful she was, can I take a minute to speak about the building – Edinburgh Corn Exchange – lovely from the outside but inside I felt like I was in a conference room for a meeting with the polystyrene roof tiles and hideous fluorescent lights; not my first choice of venue and not somewhere I would imagine Paloma playing.

But once those curtains parted, her set made me forget about all of this. It looked like a garden with a large tree and bench and her band strategically placed around in fantastic clothes--very chic looking. Then she opened her mouth and you remember how silky smooth and rich her vocals are. If I closed my eyes I could be transported back in time. Her hits “Stone Cold Sober” and “New York” were favourites with the crowd; everyone was singing along.

But her rendition of “Do you want the truth or something beautiful” was fantastic, completely different from the album version with an instrumental break in the middle to allow her to change outfits. This instrumental break showcased how talented her band was. The backing singers had voices like angels and so much soul. This definitely got me moving. When Paloma reappeared she was wearing a sheer and PVC cat suit. Not my favourite choice of costume from her but she looked great none the less.

She interacted with the crowd loads, which actually gave me an insight into the type of person she is. She was chatty, witty, funny, cheeky, and she had the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand. During her set she tried out a few new songs which may be on her new album – she isn’t sure when it will be out – she was very honest about this but allowed the audience to rate the songs in a clapomiter style. One of which is entitled “Cellulite” was hilarious but very real to women; the lyrics were written in a funny way but were meant with truth! The new tracks should definitely be added to the album, or well, so the Edinburgh crowd thought.

Paloma also performed several covers. My two favourites were “Sexy Chick” by David Guetta and “Akon”, which she changed to be “Sexy Minx”. Paloma performed it in her sultry retro way, and it was smoking hot!! Something I would buy and listen to over and over again. The next cover I loved was Ce Lo Green’s “F**k You”, and man did she go for it with this song. It took me by surprise as she comes across so chic and polite but this gig really allowed me to see her personality, which made my girl crush on her get bigger. She blasted those swear words out and looked as though she was having the time of her life on stage.

Really great gig, and an artist I will rush and see again!!!!
