Lorna Irvine looks at a 'very special' band.
That Firefly Burning aren't as big as Sigur Ros is something of a head-scratcher.
The N London quintet make music which is utterly bewitching. Bea Hankey (vocals), Jack Ross (guitars, percussion), Sam Glazer (cello), James Redwood (violin, mandolin) and John Barber (piano, gamelan, synths) are very special.
Second album Skeleton Hill, a collaboration between the band and ace producer Tim Friese-Greene, is a startling thing of beauty. Mandolins, piano and avant-pop textures weave minimal patterns around Bea Hankey's spectral voice which could chill to the bone, or envelop in a huge embrace.
‘Pioneer,’ the second single from Skeleton Hill, is out now on Fathom Records.
