Lorna Irvine looks at an impressive musical act, soon to be seen in Scotland.
Ibeyi are Paris-based twins Lisa-Kainde (quiet, introverted) and Naomi (loud, fearless) who could be a marketing man's dream--beautiful, stylish and making wonderful music. Their trajectory into making inspired sounds is not a surprising one, as their late father is Miguel 'Anga' Diaz, a world-famous conga player, generally regarded as one of the finest and part of the Buena Vista Social Club.
While there are traces of world music and jazz in the young women's songs, such as ‘Better In Tune With the Infinite’, ‘River’ and ‘Mama Says’, they have a modern aesthetic of using samples and off-kilter percussion.
Their debut album dropped on February 16th on Rough Trade and they play Glasgow's Broadcast on the 21st.
