Lorna Irvine tells us to 'expect wonders' with an upcoming album.
Discovered by fellow folk singer (and now acclaimed actor) Johnny Flynn, who produced her first EP, ex-Burberry model Marika Hackman has a world-weary vocal which sounds eerily mature, much more so than her twenty-two years.
Her songs have a dreamy, laconic sound, with melody lines wandering off into unpredictable avenues. Indeed, track 'Drown', one of the greatest songs of last year, has a metallic, detached quality that is almost reminiscent of early Stereolab or the much-missed Broadcast. To pin her down as 'just another folk singer' would be to miss the point.
Her debut album We Slept At Last will be released on Transgressive on the 16th of February. Expect wonders.
