Lorna Irvine reports on the rise of a new act.
Norwich-based alt-chamber band Wooden Arms have been whipping up a storm over the last year.
Formed by outspoken and charismatic lead singer, classically trained piano teacher Alex Carson, they follow Rachel's and Godspeed You! Black Emperor in the impossible to pigeonhole crossover acts.
Songs like 'December' typify their sound: a string-drenched swoon with trumpets which the band describe as 'a mariachi death march for a New Orleans prostitute'. Can't say that about Iggy Azalea.
Their epic, layered sound is at once timeless and immediate. Their debut album Tide is short, at roughly half an hour, but lovely, and it is out now on Butterfly Collectors.
