Ones to Watch

Lorna Irvine reports on two up and coming acts: Lone Lady and Hinds.

Lone Lady

Manchester's Julie Ann Campbell is a no-nonsense artist, whose debut Nerve Up appeared to great acclaim in 2010, and who has collaborated with no less than post-punk legends Jah Wobble and Keith Levene.

Her next solo album for 2015 carries a weight of expectation, as current single ‘Groove It Out’, an itchy slice of funk, is a belated song of the year.

A versatile musician, who blends punk, funk and modern electro, it is no surprise Warp snapped her up. 2015 will be a big one for her, methinks.

Hinds

Now here's a band to make you feel ancient. Spanish quartet Hinds are a mischievous young band whose energy levels are enough to make you exhausted just watching them.

It's music as raw and delightfully punky as late teens should play it. ‘Between Cans’ is demented doo-wap while ‘Bamboo’ is scrappy. If the songs turn into a yelling match and almost fall apart, it's through sheer innocence and charm--not any cynical marketing ploy.

And all the more spontaneous, fresh and wonderful for it.
