Review: Monsterrrr! ****

Anna Burnside reviews a ‘brilliantly judged’ performance.

A snaggle-toothed monster in a tutu is causing a wild rumpus. He throws a Christmas tree (undecorated) over a wall and gives a cuddly deer a hefty kick.

It is all brilliantly judged. Few things are as exciting to a young audience as an adult - which Monsterrr clearly is, despite his matted pastel suit and triple horn headpiece - being naughty.

Trygve Wakenshaw is a hugely gifted physical performer, whether he’s miming being locked in a box or doing the macarena. He speaks a very funny muttered language that is not a million miles from Rowley Birkin QC of Fast Show fame.

Comedy’s gain is nursery school teaching’s loss as he is also a really skilled crowd controller. The chaos builds throughout the hour, with the level of participation increasing as the show progresses. A sequence with a buzzer that makes a variety of flatulent noises takes the art of the fart gag to a new level.

For the last section of the show, Wakenshaw becomes a fully-fledged agent of chaos as he punches through the wall (it’s made of paper), inflicts some more pain on poor Bambi and plays hide and seek with the audience.

This deserves to be a monsterrrr hit.

Monsterrrr! performs at Assembly George Square Gardens (Piccolo Tent) at 12:00 until August 17, 2025 (no performance on the 12th).
