Anna Burnside reviews ‘a refreshing, if not always completely successful’ production.
Macbeth is dead. So, what happened next?
Thrice is Al Seed Productions’ projection of exactly that, explored via three sets of witches in a devastated Scottish landscape.
Here are familiar lines from the play turned in on themselves and combined with Lina Limosani’s graphic choreography to look at the consequences of the bloody nights at the castle.
The ensemble speak and sing in unison, the chanting and movement creating a kinetic energy of its own. At its best it’s hypnotic. During the longueurs it loses focus and drifts away.
Alberto Santos Bellido’s lighting is low and atmospheric, in keeping with costume designer Zephyr Liddell’s muddy colour palette. The porridgey dresses, aprons and knitted hoods have something of the TOAST catalogue about them.
Directors Seed and Judith Milligan have found a way to reframe both the characters and the story of Macbeth. It’s refreshing, if not always completely successful.

Thrice tours Scotland with final performance at the Traverse Theatre until 24 October 2026. For further details, go to Al Seed Productions’ website.
