Michael Cox reviews the return of the acclaimed event in Pitlochry.
There is so much that entices when it comes to The Enchanted Forest: a walk through the crisp night air and the smell of the woods is reason enough to book. The fact that COVID prevented what is arguably one of Scotland’s finest cultural events from running the last few years makes its return all the more welcome.
To the uninitiated, The Enchanted Forest is a light and sound installation within Faskally Woods near Pitlochry. A coach takes ticket holders from the town centre to the location, which every year is designed around a theme—this year’s being ‘Together’. Some years are a bit more fluid than others when it comes to traffic flow of audiences—Together is designed with one direction in mind, even if it can be enjoyed using alternative routes.
Part of the fun that comes with The Enchanted Forest is the sense of discovery—not knowing what lies ahead and around the corner. It could be a projected film or a musical crescendo or a piece that requires interaction. Every year, the space is used differently—spots that had little happening one year might be the location of a showstopper the next.
It is in this respect that, unfortunately, Together flags a bit—there isn’t really a standout moment. Perhaps this is down to budgetary concerns or the fact a new firm has taken over the design of the event. There is little interaction for audiences to engage with, and most of the major locations have bright lights that flash at and dazzle the audience—something that was rare in previous years. There is nothing wrong with this year’s event, but in comparison with past editions, this one feels a bit lacking.
However, if there’s one thing that has always been a strength of The Enchanted Forest, it has been the energy and resilience of the stewards. Always ready with a smile and infectious enthusiasm, they have always made the event feel more special and celebratory rather than a mere ‘experience’ they are ushering you through. It was clear on the press night that each and every one of them was happy to be back: and because of that, so were we.
The Enchanted Forest runs until October 30th. It is sold out, but tickets might be available via the website.
