Festival Review: 8:8 ****

Michael Cox reviews a thought-provoking production.

8:8 is difficult to review: it is an encounter for an audience of eight to bare witness to eight individuals. The theatre-makers were inspired by the idea of exploring impressions: how much can one know of a person they’ve just met. Are they lying, trustworthy, sympathetic? And can one change an opinion with further information?

Maybe the production doesn’t fully succeed in exploring these concepts, but what it does do is create a thought-provoking 25-minute piece of theatre. To give away any of its structure would cheat audiences of the intended discovery, but it is an accessible piece that is always interesting and should be seen—if only to be able to openly discuss it with other audience members.

8:8 is at Summerhall until August 25 (not 12 or 19). Check venue for specific times as they vary.
