Jo Turbot reviews a fond farewell to an legend 'with elegance, grace and oomph'.
This is a swan song like no other. Not an indulgent one but a gorgeous big thank you; an ode to those who have supported, inspired and worked with Sylvie Guillem throughout an outstanding and fascinating career. Working with three choreographers, Akram Khan, Russell Maliphant and Mats Ek, who have clicked with Guillem throughout this time, the work highlights her passion, her dedication and her life in dance, each giving an insight into who she is, not only as a dancer but as Sylvie too. It takes account of where she is in her life while simultaneously showing us why we are in awe of her.
The majesty of this breath-taking woman doesn't reside simply in what she can do but resonates in how she does it. Her humble, tender yet magnificent range of qualities and dynamics married with phenomenal physical power, technique and artistry have you spell bound. Guillem gives us a masterclass in how to hold an audience of 5,000 in the palm of your hand in solo work. The expression that she can find in the flutter of her fingertips to the beauty of the length of extension in her limbs, the elevation and the consistent precision is incredible.
Guillem, who has inspired and will continue to inspire generations of dancers, has said farewell to the dance floor with elegance, grace and oomph.
Was presented as part of this year’s Edinburgh International Festival.
